Reduce Your Family's Risk for Cancer

You can reduce your family's risk for cancer. Research has shown that up to two-thirds of cancer deaths are caused by smoking, physical inactivity and poor diet choices.

By teaching children healthful habits and by following them yourself,  you can reduce your family's risk for cancer. Dr. Ann Kulze, a well-respected physician and nutrition expert, and a member of the Prevent Cancer Foundation’s Board of Directors, has created these tip sheets for families:

In addition to following the tips on the sheets above, there are four primary habits that everyone should adopt:

These steps are more than a call to action — they're the keys to leading a longer, healthier life. Integrate these steps into your daily life gradually, share them with family, support friends in the midst of these life changes — it's never too late to make simple lifestyle changes that can save your life.

You may be at greater risk for some cancers if you have a personal or family history of cancer or certain diseases. To help determine your risk, complete a family medical history chart, like this one, and share it with your health care professional and other family members.

For each blood relative, mark in the box if they have had cancer, the type of cancer they had and at what age they had it. This will help you and your health care professional decide which cancer screenings you may need and when to begin them.
