Congressional Families

The Congressional Families Cancer Prevention Program is a bipartisan network of spouses of Members of the House, the Senate, Cabinet and Supreme Court who share an interest in advancing cancer prevention, early detection and education.

The program  was founded in 1991 as a partnership between the Prevent Cancer Foundation and the Congressional Club, a bipartisan spouses club. Congressional spouses enjoy unique visibility in all areas of the country and use this platform to reinforce their goal of educating, motivating and advocating cancer awareness and early detection to make them a part of every man and woman's total health routine.

Over 140 spouses currently serve as Members of the Congressional Families Advisory Board and participate in advocacy activities, educational seminars, and awareness campaigns.

Congressional Families' activities range from giving presentations to civic and community groups, making radio and television presentations or public service announcements, organizing health fairs and conferences, and writing opinion/editorial pieces for local print press.

A cornerstone of the program is the annual awards luncheon that takes place each September in Washington, D.C.

The luncheon provides the opportunity to bring members together and recognize individuals who have furthered an awareness and understanding of cancer prevention and early detection.

Past award recipients include: Susan Ford Bales, John Mack Carter, Katie Couric, Debbie Dingell, Senator Bob Dole, Sam Donaldson, Mary Jane Fate, Dr. Elmer Huerta, Patti LaBelle, Senator Connie Mack and Mrs. Priscilla Mack, Nancy Murkowski, the Honorable Sandra Day O'Connor, Andrea Roane, General H. Norman Schwarzkopf, Jane Seymour, Harry Smith, Sue Ann Thompson and Paula Zahn.

The Congressional Families program is sponsored by:
